Herat is one of the metropolises of Afghanistan, the center of Herat province in the west of that country. This city is considered to be the second most populous city in Afghanistan after Kabul. Its population in 2020 is estimated at 556,205 tons. Herat is the industrial hub and the most important cultural-artistic center of Afghanistan. The famous Harirud river passes through this city. And due to the fact that during the history of this city, it has always been considered a part of Khorasan, and has been under the cultural and historical influences of Khorasan, today this city is known as the Jewel of Khorasan. The people of this city speak Farsi with the Herat dialect, the main people of this city are Tajiks, of course, Herat has different ethnic groups. Other ethnic groups living in it are: Tajik, Pashtun, Hazara, Turkmen, Baloch and Arab (Khazai Arab, Shibani Arab).

This city is famous for its magnificent minarets and architecture, and in the past and present, Herat has been considered one of the major educational centers
