Damascus is the largest city and the capital of the Syrian Arab Republic, located in the southwestern corner of the country.
As one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Damascus has witnessed ancient civilizations and a major cultural center of the Levant and the Arab world. The architecture is therefore influenced by different periods of the history, including the Roman and Ottoman Empires as well as the Islamic civilization.
The city is among the holy sites of Shia Muslims as it is home to the Holy Shrine of Sayyida Zaynab, the granddaughter of Prophet Muhammad.
Damascus used to be a major trade hub in the past, with state-owned industries playing the main role, however war and conflicts have largely affected its economy and activities.
