Considering the important and influential role of the elected officials, including members of the city councils and societies in promoting local democracy and realizing good urban governance, with the joint proposal of the Secretary General and the representative of Tehran City Council and the approval of the Executive Board And the General Assembly at the Gaziantep Summit a network called the “Cooperative Network of Members of Councils and Urban Societies" was defined within the framework of the goals and structure of the Asian Mayors Forum. The purpose of this Network is to facilitate the exchange of approaches, information and special experiences related to urban councils and societies and cooperate within the framework of their duties and responsibilities, such as the development of urban laws and regulations, development of public participation, local democracy and oversight of the process and performance of local institutions and organizations, including municipalities, mayors and other local authorities. It is recommended that each member cities have an effective presence, at least in one of the Forum’s specialized committees and networks, at least based on their interests, approaches, policies, programs, challenges, and issues. However, the simultaneous presence of one member in several committees or cooperation networks within the framework of the Forum of the Asian Mayors is not restricted.
